Overview

Suitable for complete beginners upwards, this two-day course will introduce you to slip casting - a ceramic process whereby liquid clay slip is used to produce perfect copies from a plaster of Paris mould.  This interesting process can become highly creative by using coloured casting slips and imaginative techniques.

You will be provided with all basic materials.

Please bring a notebook and pen, a small/medium-sized fruit or vegetable and an apron and/or old clothes.  For health and safety reasons, no open-toed footwear may be worn.

You will need to bring your own lunch.  Facilities for beverages will be available throughout the day.

Day 1:

  • Demonstration of mould, Part 1
  • Producing mould, Part 1
  • Demonstration mould, Part 2
  • Producing mould, Part 2
  • Demonstration – bungs
  • Producing bungs (optional)

Day 2:

  • Demonstration and practice – slip casting techniques
  • Presentation of work of contemporary makers
  • Further casting practice / finishing of moulds from Day 1

Learning Outcomes        

  • Produce your own multi–piece plaster mould of a fruit or vegetable
  • Exploration of creative and imaginative slip casting and coloured slip techniques, using fruit and vegetable and stock moulds.
  • Work produced may be left for firing and collected later – or taken away unfired
