MUSE Project Helps Young People with Learning Difficulties
16th October 2009
Barry Farrimond - a graduate in creative music technology from Bath Spa University - has established The MUSE Project, which is a Community Interest Company (CIC) that aims to break down the barriers experienced by young people with learning difficulties to participating in, and expressing themselves through, music making.
Based in Bristol, the MUSE Project helps children and young people with moderate to severe special education needs to interact with music and multimedia. Over the past three years, it has grown and delivered workshops at several schools and youth groups in the South West. MUSE uses bespoke, purpose-built, digital equipment to deliver their individualised, therapeutic music sessions.
In liaison with the Artswork Music Lab at Bath Spa Univesity, MUSE will be providing work experience placements and research opportunities for students studying for their BA Creative Music Technology degree. This will provide students with an insight into how cutting-edge music technologies and innovative interactive interfaced are being used to provide marginalised young people with music making opportunities within a commercial organisation.
MUSE is also interested in providing an environment that will facilitate specific student projects, with a particular emphasis on developing new innovative technologies that facilitate and embellish human-computer interactions for people with moderate to severe special educational needs and help them to enjoy rich musical experiences.
Additionally, as The MUSE Project’s Director of Technology, Barry provides consultancy in the creative application of technology and innovative design for interactive multimedia with a particular emphasis on universal accessibility.
