Karen Nicol as Designer in Residence

Karen Nicol - an embroidery and mixed media textile designer - is welcomed to Bath Spa University as Designer-in-Residence in the School of Art & Design. As well as mentoring two Fashion & Textiles students, Karen will be bringing the benefit of her industry knowledge and experience of running her own highly successful business to both students and staff alike through seminars and workshops.
Karen Nicol has a London-based design studio, established for over 25 years, and works in gallery, fashion and interiors. Clients in the world of fashion include Givenchy, Chloe and Matthew Williamson. She has also has her own label range for Anthropologie. Karen's interior textiles have been used by many people from the King of Qatar to His Holiness the Pope and she has her own label range for Designers Guild.
For the past five years, Karen's work has embraced gallery art pieces. This has included being commissioned by Shell Oil to create an artwork to celebrate plankton and by St James' Cancer Hospital in Leeds for a large triptych. This was followed by her first solo shows at the Rebecca Hossack Gallery and the Mantero Gallery in Como, Italy. This year, Karen was selected for the 2010 Jerwood Contemporary Makers exhibition shown in London, Edinburgh and Ireland.
Following 15 years as senior lecturer in mixed media and two years as a research fellow at the Royal College of Arts, Karen is currently Visiting Professor in Textiles.
