Graduate Innovation Goes Into Production

13th May 2010

In 2007, Anne Selby - a textiles student at Bath Spa University - won innovation funding to develop a prototype Arashi Shibori wrapping machine.

Having formed her own business, Anne Selby Ltd has just announced the availabilty of the Compleat(TM) Arashi Shibori Wrapping Machine.  This multi-award winning machine will take the strain out of the production of high quality and multi-layered pleated fabric garments and accessories for designer-makers, design houses and students on textiles courses. The machine enables dyeing to occur along the top of pleats, if desired, which is a feature unique to Arashi Shibori.

The machine has taken more than two years to develop and has won three major awards for Anne.  It enables high quality and reliable wrapping, dyeing and texture-setting of fabric as well as the easy manipulation for multiple layers, which cannot be managed by hand. Most pleating only involves a single layer of fabric - the Compleat (TM) wrapping machine is all set to change that!

The machine avoids the risk of repetitive strain injury and places high levels of quality and complexity in the manipulation of fabric within reach of the comparative novice. The machine is energy-efficient and re-cycles steam while avoiding damaging condensation from affecting the fabric.

Novel features include the unique Gripper, which enables even the lightly-muscled to produce tight pleating of fabric, including leather, silk and bamboo, which can also include multiple layers. The result can then be dyed and steamed, all within the machine for speed, ease of use and economy.

Anne Selby comments: "The original idea was to provide a one-stop facility for the production of high quality pleated fabric products with complete confidence, even for the relative beginner. I'm thrilled that it has been recognised as also appropriate for more commercial uses including the production of scarves, wraps and neck-pieces as well as panels for clothing such as wedding dresses."

There are already plans to use the machine in colleges offering textile courses and in a new high quality production facility in Sri Lanka, which offers top quality pieces at competitive prices.  Anne Selby Ltd is supervising the initial setting up and operation of this facility.

The machine is now ready for sale to individuals and organisations at competitive rates, both in the UK and worldwide.  It is suppled with full CE rating and with the power supply appropriate for the country of operation.
