Bath Spa University Students 'Premiere' 350-Year-Old Play

22nd January 2010

Leontius, King of Cyprus

In the 17th century, James Compton - the 3rd Earl of Northampton and a significant Royalist military leader during the Civil War - wrote a collection of plays that struggled to make sense of the political crisis of his time.  Luke Beattie directs students from Bath Spa University's 'Staging Shakespeare' class in the modern world premiere of one these little-known 350-year old plays - Leontius, King of Cyprus.

In a Kingdom wracked by civil war, loyalties are constantly tested and can shift for as high an ideal as honour or as base a lust as revenge.  In the midst of this national conflict, love and jealousy battle on a personal level in a romantic tale.  While two opposing forces fight for supremacy, a king's precarious position hangs in the balance.
